Between the dates of June 1, 2021 – August 31, 2021, participants completed the runDisney Virtual Series: Celebrating the Lion King. The “weekend” was comprised of three 5k’s and a challenge. The 5ks were all titled after what the different variations of the Lion King are known for: The Timeless Classic, The Broadway Phenomenon, and The Reimagined Classic. The challenge worked the same way that most runDisney challenges work by way of completing all the races offered. I participated in the challenge. This was my first ever runDisney challenge. I decided that I wanted to do this challenge because it is only three 5ks, and 5ks are something that I do every night therefore this would be an easy way for me to finally be able to say I have completed a runDisney challenge.
To run a virtual race just means that you run the race at some point during the designated completion period and submitting your times. You must also print out you race bib before you run the race (Jenna Runs Disney). As I said I run three miles every single night, so this challenge was all about times for me. I took advantage of this racing style to self-improve for the sake of self-improvement. The thing is that the pressure free aspect of this race worked against my want for self-improvement. There cannot be motivation to keep up with the crowd of runners who you are participating with, if there is no crowd of runners. In a regular runDisney race there are pacers who run with large signs displaying how many minute miles they are running to help runners keep on track with their times. Unfortunately, these runners are not present at my favorite local park. I ended up running six 5ks on six different days as if they were my actual race and picked the three best times to be submitted. It was more of a challenge than expected, but I am happy with the progress that I made. I got my medals delivered in the mail on September 7, 2021. I was only expecting four medals, but I received five. The first medal was for The Timeless Classic and it is young Simba with his mane of leaves from the song I Just Can’t Wait to be King. The second was for The Broadway Phenomenon and it is a bronze recreation of one of the beautiful and iconic head pieces from the costumes of the Broadway musical. The third medal was for The Reimagined Classic and is a detailed image of Rafiki lifting newborn Simba to present to the kingdom of Pride Rock for the first time. The fourth was for the virtual challenge and was the classic image that Rafiki drew into his tree of Simba after his birth complete with and orange line across his forehead and green leaves around the edges of the medal. The fifth medal was just a smaller version of the virtual challenge medal and was a pleasant surprise given for participating in the virtual series of runDisney. There is no doubt that the virtual series of runDisney is more convenient that the typical runDisney affair (I didn’t even have to ask off work), but to what extent is that worth? I love doing runDisney because it is Disney! There is just a certain magic that can only be had while in person. So, though this was a neat experience to have and a great way to introduce myself to Disney challenges, I excitedly await the next on property race weekend!
